Permanent International Assignments

A permanent international assignment is an affiliate that will spend the duration of their affiliation outside the United States or hiring an employee to work outside the United States for an indefinite period.

Affiliates

Approval is required by Global HR prior to an affiliate being hired that will be outside the United States. Affiliates are not authorized to collaborate with Georgia Tech until approval is granted by Global Human Resources.

Employees

Employees that will work outside the United States permanently are hired through Safeguard Global and Safeguard Global will be the employer of record.

Safeguard Global Responsibilities:

  • Payroll and Benefits: Safeguard Global handles payroll processing, benefits administration, and other HR-related tasks.
  • Compliance: Safeguard Global ensures compliance with local labor laws and regulations, and tax withholding.

Hiring Process

Hiring departments must submit a request to the Administrative Services Center to initiate the process of hiring someone to work outside the United States. Upon receipt and after an initial review, Global HR will work with the department to collect additional information and provide guidance on the next steps.

Employee Post-Hire Processes and Information

Changes in Employment

Requests for employment or payroll changes (e.g. salary change, title change, FTE change, etc.) must be submitted to Global HR at least 30 days prior to the effective date. To request an employment or payroll change for a Safeguard Global employee, departments must submit the Safeguard Global – Employment & Payroll Changes e-form in iStart.

Compensation

Employees of Safeguard Global are paid in their local currency. See gatech.service-now.com for more information.

Contract Extension or Termination

Requests to extend or terminate an employee’s Safeguard Global contract must be submitted to Global HR at least 30 days prior to the effective date. To request an extension or termination, departments must submit the Safeguard Global – Contract Extension or Termination e-form in iStart.

Costs

The cost of hiring an employee through Safeguard Global varies depending on the country of hire. A cost estimate is provided by Global HR to the hiring department when it is determined an individual must be hired through Safeguard Global.

Invoices

Safeguard Global sends monthly or bi-weekly invoices to Global HR. Upon receipt, the invoices are sent to the designated invoice approver for approval. Upon approval and receipt of a departmental work tag, the invoice is processed by GTHR Financial Operations.
