Workers' Compensation FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Need Assistance?

When am I eligible to begin receiving Workers' Compensation payments?

You are eligible to begin receiving weekly income benefits if you have more than seven days of lost time due to a work related injury.

What happens to my benefits while I am out of work due to a Workers' Compensation injury?

Your benefits will continue as long as you pay your monthly premiums (premium rates will remain the same). If you elect to use your sick or vacation pay, your benefit premiums will be taken from your check. Once your sick and/or vacation runs out, you will be billed directly for your insurance premiums and are responsible for keeping them current to avoid cancelation of coverage.

Do I have to use my sick leave for doctor and therapy visits?

Workers’ Compensation doesn’t provide paid leave for periodic doctor or therapy visits. You don’t have to use your sick leave, but you are advised to, so that you can be paid 100% of your salary while off of work. Sick leave is a benefit provided by Georgia Tech to assist ill or injured employees. If your sick leave expires, you can use your vacation or go on leave without pay.

If I'm injured, do I have to see a doctor?

You are not forced to see a doctor. But we recommend you seek treatment from a Panel doctor for an evaluation of all work related illnesses or injuries.

Can I get Short-Term or Long-Term Disability while receiving Workers' Comp benefits?

You cannot receive Short-Term Disability (STD) while receiving Workers’ Comp benefits but you may be eligible to receive a small percentage of the Long-Term Disability (LTD) benefit. The monthly disability benefit would be reduced by the amount received under Workers’ Comp. The minimum monthly benefit would be $100.00 except in the case of an overpayment on the claim.

Are student employees covered under Workers' Compensation?

Yes. However, the student must be in a working status at the time of the injury. If they are not working, they will be viewed as a student and will need to visit Student Health Services for treatment of the injury or illness.

How do I obtain prescriptions?

If your injury or illness is work related, you can obtain your prescriptions by calling Matrix Health Services at 1-877-804-4900. DOAS employees can identify themselves at the pharmacy by stating that the Processor is Premier Pharmacy Plan- Group # 210.

How do I handle a situation where an employee is injured while working outside of the country?

The department:

  • Should advise the injured worker to go to a health care facility where they can receive treatment.
  • Should advise employees to be prepared to pay out of pocket unless they have purchased special health insurance to cover injury expenses while outside of the country.
  • Should advise the employee to have receipts translated into English and converted to US currency in order to be considered for reimbursement. Claims should be submitted to DOAS.
  • Should get the details of the work related injury and call in a First Report of Injury as soon as possible. A copy of the bills and details of the injury should be kept in the departmental file. (See On-the-job Injury Procedures for more information).

In the case of a death (whether in or outside of the country)

  • Department should call in a First Report of Injury and contact a family member if the family has not already been notified.
  • Notify the Benefits office of the death. The Benefits office will follow up with the family and handle the claim from here.
Does DOAS provide Medical Evacuation and Repatriation coverage?

They do. However, the employee should purchase separate expatriate coverage to avoid delays. This coverage can be purchased through any company offering the coverage.

Medical Evacuation and Repatriation coverage is not provided in any of the Health Insurance plans offered by Georgia Tech. But if your employee has USG supplemental life insurance, they have emergency travel assistance through Redpoint, Inc. This can be used for work or non-work related injuries. To inquire about this coverage, call 1-(855) 516-5433 (Within U.S. & Canada) or 1 (415) 484-4677 (International, call collect).  This does not include health insurance so this service does not cover medical bills.
