Temporary International Assignments

An employee or affiliate is on a temporary international assignment when they will be working while outside the United States, or collaborating with Georgia Tech, for a defined period. This includes business travel for Georgia Tech, GT-Europe assignments, GT-Shenzhen assignments, leaves of absence, personal travel, or study abroad.

Process

Global HR approval is required for any employee that will work outside the United States for more than 30 days, or an employee will work in a country listed on the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Sanctions Programs and Country Information List or a country listed on the U.S. Department of State’s ITAR § 126.1 list.

The approval process must be started at least 30 days before the assignment begins and can be initiated in one of the following ways:

Submit a Request to the Administrative Services Center

Employees and/or departmental Human Resources administrators may submit a request to the Administrative Services Center to initiate the international assignment approval process. Upon receipt, Global HR will work with the employee and/or department to collect additional information and provide guidance on the next steps.

Submit the International Assignment Assessment e-form

Employees and/or departmental Human Resources administrators with iStart access may submit the International Assignment Assessment e-form to initiate the international assignment approval process. Upon receipt, Global HR will work with the employee and/or department to collect additional information (if needed) and provide guidance on the next steps.

Workday Foreign Travel Authorization

Employees with an approved foreign travel authorization in Workday that meet the criteria stated above will be reviewed by Global Human Resources. If needed, Global HR will work with the employee and/or department to collect additional information and provide guidance on the next steps.

The international assignment must be reviewed and approved by Global Human Resources before the employee begins working outside the United States, or before the affiliate begins collaborating with Georgia Tech outside the United States.
