The categorization of jobs at Tech is getting an update that will affect job titles and set the foundation for smoother career navigation.

Over the next year, the Institute’s five existing job categories will expand to 12 distinct job families.

What is a job family?
The term “job family” describes a group of jobs with similar work, skills, knowledge, and required expertise and are grouped by function, not department. For example, finance roles may be dispersed among various departments throughout the Institute, but they all belong to the same job family.

Why is Tech introducing new job families?
Although new to Georgia Tech, the job family concept is a common business practice. Implementing an updated job family framework is the first step to creating a modern, streamlined, and structured career system across the Institute that:

  • Clearly defines career levels.
  • Details the requirements for advancement.

The framework will not result in raises or promotions, nor will it demote or terminate any employee; however, it will organize job titles within each job family, providing staff with a well-defined path to career growth based on necessary qualifications and complexity of the work.

How will Tech’s job families be implemented?
During the implementation, employees will move from their current role into an equivalent role in the new job family. Affected employees will see their job titles change in OneUSG Connect. Georgia Tech Human Resources (GTHR) will publish information to help staff better understand how current positions fit into the new job family structure. The rollout includes the introduction of new position titles and career levels.

When will job families be implemented?
The 12 job families will be implemented in three waves. GTHR will send email notifications to inform supervisors and affected staff before making any updates.

  • Wave 1
The first wave includes staff working in the Human Resources, Finance, Research Administration, and Information Technology job families. Updates will be effective Dec. 1; however, all changes will not be visible in OneUSG Connect until the end of January.
  • Wave 2
The second wave of job families includes Police and Safety; Legal, Risk, and Compliance; Administration; and Communications. Engagement with affected units will begin in January, and updates will be live in Spring 2025.
  • Wave 3
The third wave of job families includes Institutional Operations, Institute Affairs, Institutional Advancement, and Athletics, Recreation, and Healthcare. Engagement will begin in mid-2025, and implementation will begin next fall.
